Meet Cute: a cute, charming or amusing first encounter between romantic partners

One of the BEST examples of a meet cute comes from The Holiday starring Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz. In one non-climactic yet central scene, Kate Winslet’s character, Iris, meets Arthur Abbott, a legendary screenwriter played brilliantly by Eli Wallach. Iris and Arthur are discussing love and loss while on a walk, and Arthur says “This was a lovely meet cute!”. Iris, dumbfounded by a word she has never heard asks, what’s that. Arthur responds, as only a writer could:

Arthur: Say a man and a woman both need something to sleep in and both go to the same men’s pajama department. The man says to the salesman, “I just need bottoms,” and the woman says, “I just need a top.” They look at each other and that’s the ‘meet cute.’

I mean come on! Look at Eli Wallach puttin’ on the charm.

Over the course of this blog, we will chat about some of the most famous, and unlikely meet-cutes in film. The above mentioned; very unlikely however it still melts my heart. Yet, there is a twist.

A twist, you say?

Yes! I mean what is life without a little twist here and there, right? Besides the moments in film that make every girl swoon and most guys want to run to the nearest restroom and projectile all over; we will tell real life meet cutes. From myself and people that I have encountered in my life, and you as well. Yes, you. Even you have a meet cute to share.

“So much of what I see reminds me of something I read in a book, when shouldn’t it be the other way around?”  – Nora Ephron
